President’s Report – 1/11 PTA Meeting

 In News

Thanks to all who attended the PTA meeting on Monday morning. We hope to see even more of you at our next meeting in February. We promise that PTA meetings are NOT about forcing you to volunteer or get involved. They ARE about sharing what’s going on at TOW, making decisions on how we spend PTA funds, and planning new and existing programs.

This month we heard from our school psychologist, Grace Jones, who discussed her role at the school and shared valuable insights on developmental assets and behavior management. Reach out to her if you would like a copy of the handouts or any of the books she shared.

Mr. Conlon reported the 5th grade boutique raised $5001, which was donated to student selected charities such as American Cancer Society and a blindness organization. He mentioned that the 1st and 3rd grade homework club (requested at November PTA meeting) started this week. Math intervention classes were also added. The Coins for Kenya donation jars will be in classrooms all month. The final math training with the pilot math curriculum, HMH Expressions, is wrapping up for teachers this week and he believes the teachers will support adoption of this publisher.

We elected a nominating committee who will put together a slate of officers to serve on the PTA board for 2016-2017. The slate will be presented in February with elections scheduled in March. The nominating committee must select volunteers to serve in the following positions:
President
Vice President
Treasurer
Recording Secretary
Financial Secretary
Auditor
Historian
Please email contact@towpta.org if you are interested in learning more about any of these roles! Some of these are not huge jobs, but are essential to keeping all the PTA programs you know and love running at TOW.

We voted in favor of using brownpapertickets.com as a ticketing system for this year’s Talent Show and to support the school by buying snacks for the classrooms to be used in the event of a lockdown. We talked about adding a writing class to the after-school program, piloting a “student grants” program if we have funds to the end of the year, and exploring a “Cardboard Challenge” family building day as an activity.

We hope you will all join us for our next meeting on February 8 at 7:00pm in the MPR.

Thanks,

Sarah Durand
TOW PTA President
