President’s Report – 6/12 PTA Meeting

 In News

Our PTA meeting on Monday included a celebration for all our classroom and PTA volunteers, plus a special recognition for Claudia Redfern, who is retiring after 32 years at TOW. The teachers showed their appreciation for the volunteers with an incredible breakfast feast. We honored Claudia with a digital card, signed by many TOW families, past and present, a world necklace, and a gift card.

We had a short business portion. Spirit wear chair Meredith Medeiros shared the design for the TOW 50-year anniversary t-shirt that will be provided to all incoming TOW families next year. Principal Conlon shared the latest on construction–the demolotion was delayed and will now start after school is released. Construction will continue until late September or early October. Bonanza chair Gorjana Riedel expressed concern that we ensure the field is ready for the Bonanza on Oct 6. Mr. Conlon also shared about some teacher movement happening for next year. Mrs. Mattson will take the TOSA elementary school position previously held by Dustin Gowin (who will be working in special education at Thurston). Mrs. Haynes will move to kindergarten, Mrs. Parlapanides will be back to teach 2nd grade in a shared position with Mrs. Rahall. Mrs. Bynum will move to 5th grade, which she has taught in the past.

We reviewed the financials, renewed annual contracts and licenses, and adopted the preliminary budget and programs for 2017/2018 school year. That budget will be presented again in the fall. We also adjusted the current budget to reflect actual income/spending during the current year and we approved spending for the following items:

  • $14,400 for the STEM lab to fund the balance of the Weather Bug station and wish list items for the science lab
  • $750 for a refrigerator to hold uneaten, unopened food items that need refrigeration and can now be donated to the food pantry (since the meeting, CLC have reached out and may be able to donate their refrigerator for this purpose)

The end-of-year audit will commence after June 30th and auditor Aegea Lee will present it in the September meeting.

It has been my pleasure serving as PTA President for the last two years. I look forward to continue serving on the board as Parliamentarian, and am so excited about the incoming officers and all of their plans for next year. We hope you will all join us for the first PTA meeting of next year on Monday, September 18.

Thanks,

Sarah Durand
TOW PTA President
